Oh babe, I hate to go

It’s official.

We’re moving. From the city that has been home for 8 long years, we are finally stepping out. And honestly, it sucks.

For someone who hates monotony of any sort, I am pretty resistant to change. And the combination is downright ridiculous. Imagine one working very hard to settle things down, so that they would have some sort of semblance and routine in life, and actually managing to achieve it, only to call it boring at the very next instance. That would be me.

In the recent past, I did contemplate once in a while about not knowing where I was headed. And to an extent even complained about how there was just nothing to work towards anymore. But the moment an opportunity for any sort of change presented itself, I pretty much ran in the opposite direction, always. Hence proving that I am a person who revels in comfort zones. Like those puppies which would take some time to search for the perfectly welcoming spot, paw the ground, and loosen the earth around, and finally settle down there. For good. Safe, secure, comfortable.

What I forgot that in this whole ‘I want change, I am bored’, ‘No I don’t, I am happy ‘ phases that I went through so often, was that I was always involving one other person. And however puppy-like, the fact is that I am human, so I ensured it was the downs he knew more about.

Yep, The Dude. So somewhere down the path, The Dude made up his mind that a change was all that I wanted. Not that he went looking for it, he didn’t. He is as much of a puppy as I am. But one fine day, an opportunity presented itself again, and this time to him. And it was good in all ways, except that it meant change. But this time, the brain was washed enough to think that this was the moment that had been awaited all this while. So he decided to go ahead and grab it.

Ofcourse, I was in loop. I even goaded him, supported him, but the fact of the situation did not strike me until the day I was told that ‘So yes, we are moving’. And then, all hell broke loose. The weather in the city got awesome. The roads had no traffic. The tea-breaks at work seemed so much more fun. The work scenario got better. I was able to choose in a jiffy  those photos we wanted to frame and hang above the bed but could never decide upon. My friends started making night out plans. In short, everything looked bright and sunny, because we had finally decided to move on, and I would miss everything here, because like idiots, we were leaving behind the best life one could ever have, Oh My God this couldn’t be happening.

Yep, that’s my state of mind at the moment. But the decision has been made, bags are being packed, endless calls to brokers are being made, ads are being placed to let out our beautiful home. There is still time but not enough. There is still work to be done, perhaps way too much. For all I know, the new place might be all I always wanted. It might even more beautiful, perfect, just the kind one would dream about. Life might be way better. We might settle down so well that coming back might get tough. You never know.

What I do know right now is that we are moving. It is official. And man, it sucks.

  1. Oh Wishing you all the luck in the world 🙂 I am sure you guys will settle down easily…hope the packing doesnt drive you crazy 🙂 I can understand that wanting a change thing so much..I so much want a change, but the very idea of moving out of the house we are kind of used to, makes me shudder 🙂 I was telling RD the other day, I will never move out of this house..he started laughing and telling me ‘thats such a typical Indian woman mentality. Abhi sirf meri aarthi (dead body) iss ghar se jayegi’ or something in those lines :):)

    1. Thanks RM! I sure hope so too 🙂
You have no idea (ok you have some because of this post) how scared I am! But I guess eventually home is where the heart is, so I will manage! Ofcourse you guys will be updated via my know-it-all blog 🙂

  2. Hey DI.. I know once we are all set in some particular shape, it’s really tough to get out of that n gel in some new one.. I can very much relate to your apprehensions n present situation… but change is the only constant thing.. so move on… 🙂 🙂 All the best.. 🙂

    1. Thanks Pratiksha! I don’t know where my response went 😮
We are such lazy bums well set in our comfort zones no?

      1. hahahahahha….. yups.. sometimes even i wonder what has gone wrong with me…we keep on ranting abt things around us n when time comes to leave them n go.. we start loving them… 😉 😉

  3. You voice my feelings, girl! “someone who hates monotony of any sort, I am pretty resistant to change” is exactly me! All the best for the new place. You will definitely adjust soon and so will The Dude and little Zo! All the luck! But do keep posting in here!

    1. Fingers crossed! Thanks Shweta. I am praying real hard I do 😀 The Dude and Zo being the constants is the only solace right now 🙂

  4. and I hear ya….n it happens with so many of us…we wait for things to fall in place, to have a routine to look forward to…and as soon as we get that we want a change or wait for something else in life…n then again we are afraid of uncertainties…. But nevertheless the new beginning also seems promising….home is where you two are together and happy. Best of luck with all the packing, moving, unpacking, getting the innumerable connections and house help…and like the husband days and i agree once we get the fastest possible Internet connection…,that is our abode 🙂

  5. It’s a good city DI 🙂
Given your love for long drives, I can guarantee you will enjoy out there!! There us an endless list of popular spots and secret hidden spots!!!!
Let me know if you need any help, got family and friends all out there….
    Enjoy

  6. Oh is this why you were over there ?

All the best :D. Of course the whole moving out and moving sucks due to the horrendous amount of effort it consumes, but hey you can be a new setting that can turn out magical, right?

So if and when we meet, all those chocolates that I had dreamt of, will be kaput?

    1. Yep! Hopefully all will be as dreamy and awesome as I think! And er, will try join another Swiss company to ensure the chocolate supply. What say?

      1. You say such nice things 🙂

Anyway, I made three trips to that city last year due to work. I will definitely look forward to another one where we can meet.

        1. 🙂 I mean them!
Yep! Looks like the biggest positive of this move is I get to meet a lot of you guys, so cheers to that!

  7. you’ll be fine, I know 🙂 good luck for all packing and unpacking… I’m being selfish here and have told myself a 100 times till now since that sms that you’re moving closer 🙂 that how Zo and Chirpy can meet and how we can dream of a weekend trip to each others’ 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. I know Scribby! Those are definite pluses 🙂 I too look forward to all that, but I am so pansy and scared of the whole new life thing in general! Sigh. But yay, we do meet up finally!

  8. I am just like, keep cribbing about the boring life but totally detest change!
All the best for your new move. Hope it turns out awesome for you people!

    1. Thanks Arch 🙂 I hope so too! I am finding out more and more people who have the same issue as me, and it makes me feel better already! That’s why I LOVE blog world 🙂

  9. My memory is eluding me. I think I read some book where one such similar situation had come up and the protagonist was in the same state of mind as you. I think women in general would understand you, since we all hate monotony as well as change. 😛 More so if we have other people to consider about when we’re confused ourselves.
A new thing doesn’t have to be bad. I’m sure you’ll make the new place your home quickly and enjoy it there just as much. All the best! 🙂

    1. Thanks Varsh! I sure hope so too. But you’re right. Women do get attached to even the state of life I guess. I mean seriously, EVERYTHING around me makes me cry right now 😦 Bah!

  10. Hi Di,
Change always brings uncertainty and nervousness with it. But it also indicates fresh beginnings and new things. I know how hard it is to pack up from somewhere you’ve loved a lot. You are sure of missing all that good and are not sure of what the new place would have in store for you. But i’m sure there is plenty of good to be discovered for your at the new place. Also test the long distance friendship with your buddies at the old place. And I’ve been lately believing that whatever happens, happens for a reason. Ultimately that is. So a lot of good wishes for you from me 🙂

    1. I am trying to think that way. The problem is I would rather leave things as they are, untouched, untested, and permanent. But I guess you have to move on to make newer memories, right? And I hope I do, make good ones!
Thanks a lot for the wishes 🙂

  11. Hi..commenting on ur blog after a loong time..

Dont worry too much..just believe that “whatever happens it happens for your own good”..thats my mantra these days even if it sounds too melodramatic!!

I know leaving Hyd will be tough(its the place where my parents stay and where i studied-so i will always love it)…you will have beautiful new memories down the lane..

    Btw, where ru moving to?

  12. The only constant in life is change, enh? Who wants that constant right? Change that constant and keep the rest the same!
DI I know what you are going through. I am always up for change of place, but D sounds just like you every single time we talk about moving to another city. But let me tell you a secret, no matter where you go – the place will be different but you will be amazed at how similar your house will look. The same furniture, same decoration placed in similar manner. The orientation is a little different but it is all still familiar. And that bit of constant makes you smile every time you step inside the house, till you get used to it of course. But by then you are used to the new place as well. See all things work out.
Hugs till then, may the move go super smooth and you fall in love with the new place double quick. 🙂

    1. I guess that sense of relief will eventually arrive once the whole settle down phase completes. Right now, the whole confusion, things happening on time, all that makes it so much tougher!
Thanks Comfy, I sure hope all of it works out 🙂

  13. In case you’re wondering, I’m a new reader… But I will say this: you should consider yourself lucky to be moving so close to Mumbai!! If you’ve never visited, Mumbai is just magical… And what more, it’s even better for visitors like you and me than for locals. There’s always a bright side to change. Enjoy!!

    1. Thanks Alaap! 😀 Mumbai is a place I have never seen, and want to, real bad! I need to know what the hype about! So will look forward to it all of it! 🙂

  14. I understand how difficult moving from your comfort zone can be, but the prospect of trying out something new can be just as exciting too. Have you read ‘Who moved my cheese?’, DI? If no, then I suggest you do! Its a brilliant book on coming to terms with ‘change’ of any sorts in your life. I’m sure you’ll feel a lot more positive when you have adjusted to the new place, made new friends, new memories..

    Good luck to you 🙂

    1. I have! And I guess a revisit is due 🙂 I don’t get why we leave comfort zones, when comfort is all we crave for all our lives! 😀 But still, thats how life is I guess!
      Thanks!

  15. I used to be excited about move but now that I have been in same city for almost 7 years, I don’t know how I will feel about it. It will be exciting to find that routine and after that it will be routine anyway and you will be ‘settled’. And food for blog as well 😉

    1. Sigh. Yeah! I hope it doesn’t turn into a rant blog with all the changes! I guess I used to be excited before too. I am just rusted and old now 🙂

  16. Pune is a lovely city, DI. You’ll love it. The weather is lovely and there isn’t much commuting involved (from what I see here, you’re not a big fan of commuting! :P) and not too much public around. Zo will love it too. There’s so much to see and do, and yet if things get to you, you can always zip away to any one of the many hill stations close by 😀 plus its close to Mumbai too. Since I have family in both cities, Hyd and Pune, I think Pune is way better IMO. And because of all the colleges it has, finding a college for Zo will be easier when she grows up 😀 Maybe you’ll miss Hyd for the sentimental value it holds but trust me, Pune will seduce you in no time 😛

    1. 🙂 I sure hope all you say is true and remains so! You I can trust since you have been to both cities quite a bit you say?
Zo and college! 😮 I did not know where I would be a month ago, and we are talking eons here! God knows where I would be when Zo and college happen! 😮
